Swedish online discount grocery retailer Motatos to launch surplus stock service in UK in June

Matatos: saving food from landfill to sell at a discount

Swedish discount grocery retailer Motatos is to launch its online-only redistribution grocery model in the UK next month.

The company, which is already big across the Nordics and Germany under the name Matsmart, takes surplus stock from supermarkets and distributors and then sells it to shoppers at a discount, before they are put in landfill.

The products, which don’t include fresh, frozen or chilled items, and typically encompass large pack beverage, snacks, household, pet and beauty lines, are usually those that are on short best before dates or are seasonally out of favour with other retailers.

Orders are made online via the retailer’s website and typically take between one and three days to come. The company will hold back deliveries until it has enough boxes to pack the order. Large and high value orders will be delivered free of charge.

“UK shoppers are incredibly passionate about sustainability but they need easy and cost-effective ways to make sustainable choices that often come with a hefty price tag,” says UK country manager Christabel Biella.
