E-commerce sales rose by more than two-thirds in the UK over the half-term holiday, according to today’s BDO’s High Street Sales Tracker.

In the week ending June 6, mail order and online sales rose by 72%, compared to the same week last year. “Exceptional” sales were reported by clothing retailers.

On the high street, the run up to Father’s Day was thought to be behind a 7.6% rise in non-fashion sales. Overall like-for-like sales were up by 11%.

Fashion saw a 9.3% rise on last year, with “outstanding results” in footwear and youth ranges. However overall fashion sales were down compared to last week’s rise of 10%.

Strong sale came in homewares, once again thanks to promotions. Furniture sold well, as did cookware and lighting.

Don Williams, head of retail at BDO LLP, said: “The positive sales momentum was sustained for another week with most stores reporting healthy growth.

“The prevailing mood amongst consumers continued despite increased speculation concerning the negative impact from the forthcoming emergency Budget.”
