British consumers are feeling flush in the lead-up to Christmas with almost half of people admitting to shopping online whilst sat on the toilet. 46% of shoppers from both the UK and France said they shop on the loo, proving that it’s more than just a flash in the pan, whilst only 30% of German shoppers bought whilst sitting on the throne.


Hermes, who deliver parcels for 40% of the UK’s leading retailers, has revealed a number of unusual online shopping habits as part of its latest international shopping survey, based on the behaviour of 2,000 UK shoppers and a further 1,000 from both France and Germany.

Despite being able to multitask with ease in the bathroom, British shoppers could be putting their love lives on hold as the festive season approaches. Almost 80% of Brits admitted to slipping inbetween the sheets, but only to indulge in some retail therapy. In comparison, the Germans are most likely to enjoy some festive frolicking with only 58% people admitting to shopping whilst in bed.



British shoppers were also most likely to ditch the spreadsheets and buy online whilst at work, with almost 60% of people admitting getting paid to shop! French and German workers proved to be more honest as only 49% admitted to being sneaky office shoppers.

The top of the Eiffel Tower, the summit of Ben Nevis, on a rollercoaster and during a friend’s wedding were among the most unusual locations where people have shopped online this year, respondents reported.

Mark Pettit, Sales & Marketing Director, Hermes, said: “It is no surprise to hear that UK consumers top the charts when it comes to shopping in unusual places. Our research reveals that more than twice as many Brits are using smartphones and tablets to shop online compared to the French and Germans. Of the British shoppers buying in strange locations almost two thirds (63%) used these devices.”
