Facebook soon to launch music download service, rumours suggest

The blogosphere is buzzing with rumours that Facebook is close to launching its own music download service, potentially generating a major new revenue stream for the social networking giant. A software developer and researcher described in his blog how he spotted evidence of an unannounced Facebook music service called Vibes in a line of code.

Jeff Rose wrote on his blog that he examined the Facebook Video Chat code to see how it works and found that it made reference to features called ‘Vibes’. Reference is made to “MusicDownloadDialog” in the plug-in for Facebook’s new Skype-based video calling application.

The fact that Facebook hired former Spotify designer Rasmus Andersson last year has led to speculation that the company has a music-based project in the pipeline. However Facebook has not yet responded on whether a new music app is on the way.
