German supermarket groups Lidl and REWE have acquired new warehouse space.
Discount grocer Lidl this week signed a 10-year lease for a new logistics centre in the Netherlands.
The deal with developer DHG covers a site in Moedrijk in the southern Netherlands with 42,839 square metres of warehouse space, 4731 of mezzanine and 350 of office space.
Lidl chose the site due to its location and the possibility of expanding into other units on the site which DHG is in the process of developing, as well as the fact that it was available in the very short term.
Meanwhile, REWE has opened a new automated distribution centre in Henstedt-Ulzburg, a 86,500 square metre site which it will use to supply more than 350 stores across Northern Germany. The facility will stock over 12,000 items, including dry and fresh food.
Using automation technology from WITRON Logistik + Informatik, the company will be able to pick up to 165,000 cases on a peak day.
Matthias Bähr, business unit manager for logistics at REWE, said: “The most important reasons for this investment decision were both ecological and economic factors.
“This includes a high level of cost-efficiency along the supply chain as well as a long-term guarantee of an excellent supply of our markets, even in times of crisis. Our sustainability strategy also includes other aspects such as ergonomic workstations, the reduction of CO2 emissions through optimally packed load carriers and, as a result, the reduction of trailer tours.”
