Amazon UK is set to open a new delivery station in Carlisle, allowing it to work with smaller local delivery companies.
The 7000 square metre site at Woodlands Industrial Storage Estate will see packages from fulfilment and sortation centres loaded onto vehicles for delivery to customers across the country of Cumbria. Carlisle is located in north-east England, around 10 miles from the border with Scotland.
The online marketplace will work with eight independent delivery companies, adding additional capacity and flexibility to its own delivery network.
The site will employ more than 20 permanent workers and support around 100 drivers.
Kerry-Anne Lawlor, Country Director for Amazon Logistics said: “We are excited to open a delivery station in Carlisle where Amazon’s 20+ years of operational expertise, technology advancements and investment in transportation infrastructure is enabling faster delivery for customers than ever before seven days a week.”
Cllr Gareth Ellis, Deputy Leader for Carlisle City Council, said: “This is an excellent show of confidence in the Carlisle economy. We welcome the investment into our community and the recognition that Carlisle is a place that is open to international investment.
Amazon’s logistics arm is currently looking to bolster its main employed workforce with smaller partners. The firm is currently advertising for “delivery service partners”, where partners will operate with 20-40 vans and 30-70 drivers.
