Amazon installs 50 rooftop solar power systems at fulfilment centres

Amazon announced that it has installed 50 solar power systems across its fulfilment centres globally.
The ecommerce giant said the systems, installed on the rooftops of fulfilment centres, are now present at 32 centres in the US, 12 in the EU, and seven in India, amount to 98 MW of energy generation.

The installation means Amazon has hit one of its sustainability goals a year early, as it was aiming to reach this figure in 2020. Overall, Amazon said it has 61 solar and wind projects which can deliver over 3.1 million MWh of electricity annually.

Kara Hurst, director of sustainability, Amazon, said that “online shopping is inherently more sustainable.”

Hurst added: “Our investments in renewable energy – including reaching our goal of 50 solar rooftop installations a year early – are another important milestone in building a more sustainable business. Thanks to all the teams working hard to deliver this – we’re going to continue our investment in renewable energy.”

Abigail Ross Hopper, President and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association, said: “Corporate solar investments are surging thanks to companies like Amazon.

“Over the past three years, Amazon has installed more solar than any other company, showing that clean energy both boosts the bottom line and helps companies meet climate commitments.”

In February, Amazon outlined a goal of delivering 50% of its shipments with net zero carbon by 2030.
