Same day delivery on the up but question around profitability remains

Same day delivery may still be small currently but is increasingly proving popular amongst consumers, according to latest research.
IMRG recently analysed the rise of same-day delivery over the year. While this faster delivery method accounts only for 0.08% of online orders, it has grown from just 0.02% the previous year.

It’s a trend that is being seen at footwear retailers Schuh where the increase is evident in the number of online orders fulfilled from store stock and collected within an hour.

Sean McKee, director of ecommerce and customer experience at Schuh, says that the footwear retailer sees less orders returned if they are fulfilled using a faster delivery method such as same day. However, returns of click and collect orders are higher than standard delivery since, in the customer’s mind, easy pick up equates to being easier to take back.

Bhavesh Unadkat, principle consultant in Retail Customer Engagement Design, Capgemini, sees same-day delivery as a continuing trend for ecommerce in 2017. The question though will be how to do it profitably.
